MBC: We All Play

This lovely book, We All Play, was created by one of my favorite authors and illustrators, Julie Flett.

It conveys a spirit of delight in play that is relatable and infectious.

It highlights that all living beings engage in play, many in very endearing ways.

When we help children feel a sense of affiliation with all life, we support them in acknowledging and valuing all life.

That is important work for us as human beings.

As you read this book, ask your child if you can think of any other types of animals that you know like to play.

  • Have you seen any lately?

  • Can you make a plan to notice them while you’re out and about?

  • Would your child like to create a drawing of animals or friends at play?

I love this book for another reason, too. It is an opportunity to connect with your child about Indigenous cultures. Julie Flett is a Cree–Métis creator and the book features words written in Cree as well as English.

Indigenous cultures should be acknowledged and appreciated throughout the year - not just on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. If you aren’t sure how to approach this, the work of Julie Flett could provide a natural way to start or continue this conversation with your child.

Other meaningful ways for you to continue the dialogue:

  • Take the time to learn about the Native peoples of your land and their relationship with the land. Share this learning in age-appropriate ways with your child, honoring the significance of past and current contribution and ways of being.

  • Support Indigenous creators and experiences and emphasize that Native cultures are vital aspects of our present and future, and not just our past.
