MBC: Rainbow Shopping

As Chinese Lunar New Year concludes tomorrow with the Lunar New Year Parade in Chinatown in New York City, I want to highlight this beautiful book, Rainbow Shopping, by Qing Zhuang.

This story is described as “a heartfelt tribute to Chinatown and spending days-off together,” and it has much to offer a young child. Zhuang tells the story of a daughter and her mother shopping in Chinatown, in all its wonders of sight, sound, scent, taste, and feel. This is the story of a multi-generational family, living and working in New York, and it honors the experience of immigration and the importance of cultural heritage.

Have you shared experiences of Chinatown - in New York City or another city - with your child? Would you consider doing so in the months ahead? I hope you will, and I hope you’ll read Rainbow Shopping, too.

Qing Zhuang is also an art educator based in New York City - follow her here to feel inspired!
