Five Minute Favorite: At the Market
Creating a family culture of learning often comes down to many short, sweet moments that engage a young child.
In my experience, parents underestimate the power of 5 minutes of accessible engagement.
Here’s a five minute favorite for you that engages memory, strengthens retention, and supports the development of spoken language. This also helps foster connection with your child.
Think of a recent experience that you know your child enjoyed.
We’ll use an example of a farmer’s market visit. This also works for the grocery store.
Now, ask some questions.
“Remember when we went to the farmer’s market last Saturday? We went in the morning, after breakfast. The sun was shining and the air felt a little bit chilly! We visited the vegetable stand we like first.”
“What did we see at that vegetable stand?”
“What was your favorite vegetable we saw that day?”
Alternate questions: “what was the most colorful vegetable we saw? what was the largest/smallest? did we see any new vegetables that day?”
“What color were the carrots? Have you seen carrots in any other colors?”
“What did we do with the carrots when we came home?”
“What did we decide to cook with them on Sunday?”
“I wonder if we could serve them another way. Can you think of another way?”
“What vegetable would you like to try find at the market this week? I’m looking forward to going with you.”
Enjoy!
