Five Minute Favorite: Fall Conversation

Five minutes to support development.

“Let’s have a conversation about fall.”

Try any one of these as prompts at a time.

  • Let’s talk about what we may see in our neighborhood in the fall.

    • Leaves changing from green to gold, red, orange, brown

    • Leaves that have fallen to the sidewalk or into the yard

    • Pumpkins

    • Mums

    • Halloween decorations

    • Apples, pears, squash, kale at the market

  • Let’s talk about what kind of weather we may experience in the fall. What kind of clothing might we need?

    • Warm sun - t-shirt and shorts, dress, sandals

    • Rain - long-sleeved shirt, pants, rain jacket, rain boots with good socks, umbrella

    • Cool winds - sweater, pants, windbreaker jacket, socks, sneakers

  • Let’s talk about what holidays are celebrated in the fall.

    • In your family

    • In our country

    • In the lives of friends and loved ones

Remember to use follow-up questions and dialogue to support critical thinking and elaboration with language.

Follow-up sounds like:

“Where did we see yellow leaves yesterday? In the park! By the reservoir! Maybe we could take a bag out to collect leaves tomorrow.”

“What did you need to wear when we went out in the rain? Your frog raincoat! And your red rain boots. You also carried your blue umbrella. it turned inside out because the winds were so strong!”

“Do you remember when we hosted Thanksgiving last year? Let’s think of our gathering. Do you remember who was there? Can you think of some of the foods we made? I remember when we made cornbread together…”
