MBC: For the Love of Bookstores

For the love of small book shops!

A Meaningful Book Club choice in celebration of Small Business Saturday: Good Night, Little Bookstore.

Will you try to shop locally with your child this holiday season? I hope so!

When we appreciate small, local businesses, we offer children personal examples of meaningful work and the importance of community engagement. We show them that we value and prioritize investing in the experiences, individuals, and communities we care about.

This book is both charming and perfectly scaled to the young child’s sequence and routine-seeking mind.

It is written by Amy Cherrix and illustrated by one of my all-time favorites, E.B. Goodale.

This is also a good book to read at bedtime because it is about bringing the day to a quiet, purposeful close.

Prompts for some thoughtful, down-regulating bedtime reading and discussion:

  • As you read, quietly notice all the details in the illustrations. What do you see?

  • Does this book store remind your child of your favorite local bookstores or any other bookstores? Why, and why not?

  • This book focuses on the steps that it takes to close a book-shop each day. Review the steps verbally as you conclude the book. What happened first, next, next again, last?

  • What are the steps that your child needs to take to close their day?

  • What are the steps that you need to take as a family?

Enjoy! And shop small as you’re able!
