MBC: Hanukkah
It is almost time for Hanukkah celebrations!
We have Meaningful Book Club choices for you…
The Mexican Dreidel, by Linda Elovitz Marshall and Ilan Stavans and illustrated by Maria Mola, is a story about a child visiting his grandmother during Hanukkah in Mexico. This book includes words and phrases in both English and Spanish which you will want to be prepared to offer with respect and care. This story highlights Jewish experiences within Mexican culture and has a joyful, playful spirit and beautiful illustrations.
1, 2, 3, Nosh With Me, by Micah and Joshua Siva and illustrated by Svlatoslav Franko, is a sweet counting book that emphasizes the foods of Hanukkah.
Jeremy’s Dreidel, by Ellie Gellman and illustrated by Maria Mola, is a story that encourages awareness of the different needs and realities we face as human beings within the context of Hanukkah. Jeremy’s father is vision-impaired, and this story prompts the reader to consider how we care for and include all members of our families and communities. This story is a better fit for older children, age 4.5 to 5 years and up, as it includes one gently-illustrated battle scene related to the Hannukah story and a good amount of detail in general.
Chanukah Lights Everywhere, by Michael J. Rosen and Melissa Iwai, also emphasizes counting and helps children appreciate the different types of holiday symbolism in the world around them this month. This heart-warming story features the family connection and regard for children that are so integral to Hanukkah in a thoughtful way.
If your family celebrates Hanukkah, these lovely books will help your child integrate and delight in their own experiences. These offer accessible and age-appropriate ways to explore the holiday.
If your family does not celebrate, these selections will help your child appreciate the spiritual and cultural experiences of others this holiday season. This is meaningful and important developmental work.
We hope you enjoy!
